Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at our school are a special group of middle school students. If you have ever met a middle school student then you know that often they are filled with an amount of energy and curiosity that, if tapped, could power a small town. Many of my students' families struggle to support their child's well being and significant numbers of my students are recent immigrants. Our school is faced with meeting the needs of a diverse student population that is consistently struggling financially and academically at-risk.

This has not hampered our students eagerness and desire to learn and our teachers' devotion to teach, but our school needs as much help as it can get.

Many of these students struggle to make it to class on-time because they are either trying to get their younger siblings ready for their school. Many of my students are often a major caregiver for their younger siblings.

My Project

We have two computer labs at our school, which sounds like a lot, but these two labs are often being used by other teachers for student-led projects. Getting into these labs is harder than getting into Manhattan during rush hour. Many of my students do not have access to computers at home, the only time they have access to a computer is when they are at school. I am asking for twelve Lenovo Chromebook computers for our classroom. Think about how often you use your computer, how often you are typing, and where you would be without it. My students need access to computers in our classroom.

During winter break I told my students that they were supposed to type their essay, I later found out that one of my students typed the entire essay on their phone.

This project, when funded, will put computers in my students' hands.

Our second computer lab is undergoing a transition. I often do not have enough working computers to let students work with some of these great programs. We are using so many different computer programs. I-Ready is a program that tests students and adjusts the questions it asks based on the subject-matter and complexity of the questions students get correct and incorrect. We are using MyOn.com as a reading program, which reads to my students the books they want to read, and I get to monitor the time they spend reading. ThinkCerca.com allows students to read and respond, in writing, to articles and I get to give them feedback via comments on my computer.

These twelve chromebook computers will allow my students to have access to many dynamic programs. It will allow me to assign students essays and give them time to work on them in class with computers, because let's face it computers are moving and shaping who we are and I'd like to put more of that type of technology in reach of the people who will be moving and shaping our world.
