Getting Centered After Harvey

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a Title 1 school and my students are 98% Hispanic and 96% economically disadvantaged. However, they out perform many students throughout Texas on standardized tests.

Our community was recently impacted by Hurricane Harvey and in fact we started school two weeks late.

Despite the challenges my students are driven to succeed and willing to give 110%.

Many of them are English Language Learners and stay after school and come on Saturdays in order to advance to the next level. I would like to give them every opportunity to be as successful students from more affluent areas. They are hardworking.

My Project

We lost instructional time after Hurricane Harvey and we have got to get back on track! In an effort to incorporate more small group instruction, I want to use centers in the classroom and during my tutorials.

My students often have gaps in reading and losing two weeks of instruction after the hurricane didn't help.

I've already received two laptops and having two more will allow me to have a small group working on technology.

I've also requested some content specific board games to be another center. Students can work with their peers and then I can teach small groups in order to differentiate and teach them exactly what they need.
