My Students

The classroom is awash with color, wall space is in short supply, art supplies and games fill the bookshelves, and the record player sings out the album of the day. I welcome my students into this full room all day long to learn, read, create, cook, and talk. I teach at rural school surrounded by woods, hence our mascot is a logger.

My students are curious, creative, fun, and witty individuals; a surprisingly eclectic group considering our town has a population just over 400 people.

These students want to know more about the world outside of their small town. They love music, movies, and being involved in the community. Our school is the center of the town and students receive a lot of support from members within it. My students enjoy creating whether it is through painting, drawing, or writing short stories. These outlets give them an opportunity to express themselves, while also demonstrating mastery of Social Studies content.

My Project

As we begin our school year I am putting together a DonorsChoose request for books that my students will read this year. These books will be read by Juniors and Seniors and are meant to inspire them as they make plans for their future. Students will read The Little Prince and The Giving Tree together as way to reflect on the choices which they will encounter in their lives. These two seemingly simple children's books are loaded with meaning and opportunities for self-reflection.

As students prepare to graduate it is important that they become the protagonists of their own life's journey.

The Alchemist, Make Lemonade, and First They Killed My Father are all a mix of fiction and non-fiction that focus on young people making significant choices in their lives. It is my intention that these books will encourage students to develop a great sense of awareness and empathy for people around the world.

Every morning students start their day with a homeroom period, during which time we eat breakfast together, read poetry, work on graduation portfolios, and have character building lessons. It is my intention that we will read one of these books each quarter and that this will help students build their reading and writing vocabulary and to think about their place in the world.
