Help Mr. Tan

Budget cuts and the economic crisis are "killing" urban youth's opportunities for success in California. Historically marginalized for decades, these disenfranchised Watts youth find themselves in a deeper academic and technological divide. Yet despite the obstacles, this project offers hope for a very enthusiastic, creative, motivated, and resilient group of students. I am a 5th grade teacher in an urban California school who works with all current and former students in and out of the classroom. Currently, my class includes 35 brilliant and eager students, however the project will serve at least 60 students ranging from grades 5-12. The urban school I teach at is in a highly marginalized and high-need community, which has been devastated by budget cuts. The school receives 100% free lunch and our basic operational and academic supplies are limited. Despite these challenges, our class does its best to move forward.

Students suffer from a lack of supplies and resources. Technology, which is essential in this current age, is oftentimes placed on the back-burner of prioritized necessities. For students in this area, it has become a "luxury" while in more affluent areas, it's integral to the advancement and learning of students. Technology and multimedia is a highly addictive and engaging tool that the youth gravitate towards. A student will spend inordinate amounts of time learning and consuming various forms of multimedia in one day. My students are over-saturated with negative influencing media yet they are active participants in it and bring that into the classroom.

Due to its grasp on the students, multimedia must not be avoided, but deconstructed and used in uplifting ways. In order to properly use media as a positive learning, creative, and academic tool, the students will use the technology to create counter media in the form of video Public Service Announcements, research, and presentations while strengthening their academic foundations. With one laptop, powerful enough to create multimedia, students can transform their realities, outlook, and consumption of media.

With your help, over 60 disenfranchised youth (current class, former students, and future classes) will benefit from the provided technology. You will make it possible for my students to gain access to necessary resources that are commonplace in today's society. Your help will benefit future students and ensure them the capabilities to create positive counter media instead of being controlled by its negative affects.
