As students enter my classroom, I want them to feel that they are in a fun, safe place to learn and to be able to make mistakes while still feeling good about themselves. My fourth graders are a diverse group of students. I have several special education students, as well as general education students, some are working below grade, some are working on grade level and some are above grade level learners. No matter what level they are , they should all feel confident and excited every day.
My students need new and exciting ways to practice their math skills through the use of games and materials which will make math more fun while at the same time help to reinforce math concepts and number sense.
I would like to see their math stamina and fact fluency blossom this year. I am constantly trying to come up with new ways to keep all my students engaged while creating an atmosphere that fosters cooperation and excitement.
My Project
Playing games is a way to get my students to practice and reinforce their math skills, build cooperation, collaboration and encourage them through friendly educational competition.
Children will enjoy learning but more importantly they will be eager to practice and get involved while building automaticity with their facts, math concepts and number sense.
The colored "Jenga" blocks will allow me to create math games easily where students have to answer math questions in order to earn a chance to pull a corresponding colored block. The dry erase pockets will allow for multiple game boards to be switched into the sleeves to keep the games new and engaging. The straws will allow the students to create 3D models of geometric shapes and help all learners. Children will learn without feeling intimidated like they sometimes do. No child will be invisible in the games. The bouncy ball rings will allow students to choose flexible seating options and stay focused on the game. It is my hope that by playing games students won't even realize how much they are strengthening their math skills
