My Students

My preschool autism students love using their hands and creating pieces of artwork. Using paints, markers, crayons, playdough and other materials helps them to create these masterpieces all while learning to use their hands and increase their fine motor skills.

My class is an Autistic preschool class consisting of 6-9 students who range in age from 3-5.

Many of them are non-verbal and have sensory, communication, motor and social issues. A typical day in my class includes 1:1 or 1:2 time where students work on their fine motor, academic, and imitation skills. They also have circle time where they learn to sit and attend to the teacher, practice imitation skills, and participate in a group setting. Most of the activities during our day are hands on activities which include many art projects using their hands and increasing fine motor skills. The students are at school from 9-2 so having a wide variety of activities is important.

My Project

The resources will get a lot of use in my classroom. They will help students use their imaginations by giving them a variety of materials (paints and accessories, makers, stampers, playdough, etc.) to work with. We also envision these resources to help student with their fine motor skills, especially with playdough, where they would learn to roll and flatten. Paints, markers and stamps also help them use their hands by working on their grip of the materials as well as helping to strengthen their hands.

Having access to more art materials including playdough, paints and painting accessories, and markers will allow the students to not only be creative but work on their fine motor skills.

They also will be able to explore different textures and materials. Being able to introduce them to new materials will be a wonderful way to work on sensory issues all while helping them use their imaginations.
