My Students

We are a Title I school which means our student population is economically disadvantaged. We have a diverse student body with the majority of students from Guyana, India, and the Dominican Republic. We have high expectations at our school, therefore our students are polite, work hard and participate in the arts. We are constantly using current technology tools to help our school community learn and communicate in a global network. Our students are always eager to take on new and exciting initiatives such as learning how to program. We began learning about code last year with third, fourth and fifth graders. All students, especially our female students were motivated and excelled in learning coding skills for beginners.

My Project

Microduino and Littlebits Arduino will be used as a STEM center. The center will open up a whole new area of experimenting and learning that will stretch the students' understanding in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. These materials will allow students the opportunity to design, build, and code their own machines. According to an article in Edutopia titled Add Coding to Your Elementary Curriculum, Right Now, "Early exposure to coding helps teach children how important it is to understand computers as the valuable tools they are rather than merely fun play things." I want my students to begin understanding that they can be makers rather then just users.
