Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine what it must be like to go to school without the fundamental and necessary supplies to complete daily classroom activities? What if you were expected to complete classroom assignments without materials? Would you learn? What would you do? What if you couldn't ask for help?
Currently my classroom is composed of six children ranging in age from 4-6.
These children have been diagnosed with Autism. These children suffer from delays in speech and an inability to communicate; many of these students suffer from an inability to socialize with peers. These children have significant delays in both their fine and gross motor skills. Many of these children are unable to care for their basic needs independently such as toileting or feeding oneself. These children have difficulty in sensory processing and suffer from hypo or hyper sensitivity throughout the day. These children often have difficulty in expressing themselves and therefore engaging in inappropriate behaviors. The are attending a public school in an urban area in which most of our students receive free lunches due to low income housing. These children require a lot of support in order to benefit from a good education.
My Project
Many of these students are functioning at an academic level that is behind that of average peers of the same age. We are requesting typical classroom supplies that we use on a daily basis to promote functional learning such as glue sticks, markers, bingo markers, adapted scissors, laminating paper, and paper clips. All of these supplies will be used on a daily basis to help students participate in classroom activities and complete assignments. Many of these children are learning to write or may not have the fine motor coordination to do so and dot markers will give these children a chance to participate in all activities. Glue sticks are essential to help students gain more fine motor skills. Laminating paper is one of our most important items because these children require a highly structured environment with visual supports. Laminating these supports give children an opportunity to learn in an environment geared toward meeting their individual needs.
Think about the difference you can make for these children.
Think about the opportunities ahead of them. With your help these children will have a good chance at a better education. If these children do not have the essential supplies to begin the year the right way they are sure to falter, please don't let that happen. Help us to survive as a classroom community. Help speak up for those who cannot.
