In this fast-paced, technologically enhanced society, we often forget to appreciate the simple pleasures and beauty nature has to offer. I teach a 4th/5th grade gifted class in a high-need community. These low-income gifted students are the ones who will become the leaders, who will make the positive changes in their community. Instilling an appreciation of their natural surroundings will help them enhance and renew their community as future leaders.

I recently took my class out for a walk around the parking lot to gather some leaves to press. I have rarely seen such excitement in so many at one time. They wanted to know all the names of the trees, berries, and grasses. We were unable to get as many samples as we wanted due to the fact that we did not want to harm what we were trying to learn about. However, with digital cameras we will be able to take endless photos.

My students need 7 digital cameras. On the science side we will use the cameras to document various specimens and seasonal changes. On the art side, we will study the art of Ansel Adams and John Muir. Learn how one good photo can make a powerful impact. Also, that photography can be used to teach, preserve, and tell stories. My students will also learn the technical side of photography, as well. The using of the camera, editing, printing, and the various ways to use photos in different types of computer applications.

You can help my students learn that art and science are not separate, but one. Also, that beauty can be found even in the most unlikely of places. It will even encourage their notion that people do value education.
