My Students

My students are wonderful young people who represent very diverse cultures and socioeconomic circumstances. We are a Title I school that serves children in an urban area of Flushing, NY. Many of my students live below the poverty line, yet they come to school eager to learn and interact with others. Students within my classroom represent cultures from all over the world and bring their wonderful traditions and beliefs to share with their classmates.

Many of my students are the first-generation in their families to be given the wonderful opportunity to receive a public education in the United States.

These children have been entrusted to my care and I believe that with the proper tools, I can provide an invaluable educational experience.

Nonfiction comprehension is one of the areas where my students struggle the most. Reading material that includes a variety of genres in all content areas will provide the resources needed to help my students be successful readers and writers.

My Project

Scholastic Scope Magazine provides a year-long program that covers all areas of the language arts curriculum and builds proficiency in essential curriculum skills. These skills include reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and writing across a variety of genres. As students read nonfiction texts across a variety of subject areas in Scholastic Scope, they will develop content-area vocabulary and knowledge in science, math, social studies, and other curriculum areas. My students will learn to navigate complex informational and narrative nonfiction texts. They will explore topics across two or more genres that will require them to synthesize, analyze, and make meaningful cross-curricular connections. They will also build argument writing skills with debates presented in each issue. In addition to the print magazine, there are videos, audio articles, and activity sheets available on line in two or more levels that allow for differentiated instruction.

Navigating nonfiction text is essential for students to become successful readers.

Scope provides a diverse array of learning experiences to support the various learning styles and needs of my students. Research shows that classroom magazines benefit students in many ways including increasing motivation, reinforcing skills, and encouraging students to be active participants in their reading development.
