This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are located in a deep rural area of the south and are not exposed to the different science activities available. Students have science labs with little to no lab equipment/resources. Most of what the students experience in the classroom are from the textbooks or viewing online videos.
BEEMS students are eager learners and love to experience hands-on activities.
88% of the students at our school receive free or reduced lunch.
Being in a such a rural area has limited the resources that are available to my students.
My Project
My students need fetal pigs and dissecting equipment. Pig anatomy and human anatomy are similar. This will allow students the opportunity to gain real world experience about the anatomy in their own bodies.
Dissection is a hands-on way of learning anatomy.
This will provide an experience that these students will never forget as many of them will never dissect anything else until college.
Dissection allows students to see the body’s structures in three dimensions, unlike in a textbook, and how the organ systems are interconnected. Students would not have to learn the different systems of the body in isolation, but would get the opportunity to all systems working together.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
