This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low income school district, my students are faced with challenges that no 6 or 7 year old should face. Despite the lack of structure at home, I want to make coming to school enjoyable for my students.
They are so eager to learn and be successful, but most students do not come to school with the necessary tools to help motivate that eagerness.
Many of them are being raised by a single parent, aunt or uncle, or a grandparent. Every student at my school receives free breakfast and free lunch. Some students come to school when they are sick just to be fed that day.
I may certainly not be able to control their home lives; however, I control what happens in my classroom. I want these students to feel loved and appreciated every single day they walk into my classroom. By doing this, I am hopeful I inspire these learners to continue on a path of excellence.
My Project
Our school is really focusing on getting our students to be reading on grade level. My students are tested in the beginning, middle, and end of the year on reading. The library that is currently in my room is books that students cannot necessarily read but just look at the pictures. Although that is okay, I would like books that are also on the students level and easily accessible to them.
My students should be able to have resources available to them to make them feel successful as readers.
The required reading level for our students to be considered on grade level is reading on level D. For them to leave first grade into second, they need to be reading on a level J. I do not think that we have the materials that can further our students ability to read and become better readers. I would love to have a leveled reader library for students to enjoy reading and become better readers.
