My Students

I teach a group of bright, energetic, and eager young learners! My students attend a public Title 1 school in a rural area of Southeastern North Carolina. Our school serves over 500 students from preK-5. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and have many different needs.

"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." - Ignacio Estrada.

I truly believe in student-centered learning and allowing my students to grow through their own discoveries. This includes providing active learning opportunities. I hope my students will leave my classroom inspired with a love of learning!

My Project

Kindergarten is the time in a child's education that sets the tone for the rest of their learning career. It is also a time when their bodies and minds are most active. The average five year-old has an attention span of 10-15 minutes. Typically students are learning on the carpet through whole group lessons or at their seats during small group or independent activities. Children this age need 60 minutes of daily activity to maintain healthy minds and bodies. I would love to be able to give my students more outlets in the classroom to be active in a safe and productive way.

My students have always seen Hokki Stools in the classroom across the hall and longed to sit on them.

They crave the opportunity to be able to move, even the slightest bit, while working. Let's be honest, they do look like fun! While they may be fun, these stools would be more beneficial to their learning within the classroom than they know.

I plan to use these stools as an outlet for activity within the classroom. These stools will let individual students be able to get their wiggles out in a way that won't distract the classroom learning environment. They will also increase students' ability to stay engaged in their learning by not having to focus on an excess of energy. Having Hokki Stools in the classroom will help my students reach the 60 minutes of activity per day they need to be healthy!

Not every child does his or her best learning through sitting in a chair. This opportunity for movement and flexible seating will help maximize my students' learning by helping to appeal to all of their needs. I am excited to see how having Hokki Stools will positively impact the students I teach!
