Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love coming to my computer lab to learn. We will always start our class with an interactive lesson on the SmartBoard which will always maintain a multi-sensory approach. Then comes independent work on the computers, whether its using academic gaming websites or researching the internet

The population of students that I work with are on grade levels PK-5.

Our school is in the South Bronx in a low socioeconomic neighborhood. Students often find it difficult to stay on task when plagued by the myriad of issues they bring in with them on a day-to-day basis. This has a large impact on student success and growth. Our school has a new administration and a new vision. We feel fresh and ready to tackle these issues in order to help these students succeed!

My Project

I come from a special education background and I understand the importance of a multi-sensory approach with all students. While SmartBoards are great, they are exactly that, boards. The addition of 3D printing, I could potentially pass around an object I am describing instead of just showing a picture of a screen. Using this manual manipulation of items adds a whole new "dimension" to learning. Imagine being able to print out and pass around a "Wigwam" or "Longhouse" when studying Native Americans with 4th Grade! What a fantastic classroom tool! I would like to expose my students to 3D printing because it is an industry that will be molding many of the careers my students will eventually find themselves in. I want them to feel wonder of this exciting new technology and inquire about "how" things work. I believe exposing students to 3D printing now will help them seek out answers for themselves and generalize this strategy with other topics that they find intriguing.

My students love using the computer lab, but not all students understand how much technology will influence their future.

It is difficult for my students to see the grand picture because they are just struggling to get through the day. I want to show students what they can achieve by exposing them to 3D printing. My vision is to motivate young 3D engineers to become college and career ready.
