My Students

I teach an amazing bunch of students at a Title I school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our school's neighborhood was recently ravaged by the historic flooding in Louisiana. Some of my students continued to come to school while staying in shelters, hotels or with friends and family, and some are still not back in a permanent home. Additionally, 100% of our students receive free lunch, already experiencing financial hardships regularly. Academically, I have an extremely diverse group of students. One is classified as gifted, but unable to receive services at our school. Several others are also reading well beyond their grade level. Four speak English as their second language, one is developmentally delayed, and several have limited or no access to books or computers at home. They are the kindest, funnest, most outgoing group of little humans I have ever had the pleasure of knowing!

My Project

My students love to move around. They have a blast on our playground equipment, but unfortunately it is not enough for all of the first graders to play at once. At recess, they organize all kinds of races and games of tag if it is not their turn to use the slides.

They deserve to have something stimulating to do at recess!

They need jump ropes, hula hoops, and balls to play with outside each day.

I also have some special needs students and a few students who struggle with their love of moving a little too much! They are six and seven years old, so instead of 'forcing' them to remain frozen at their desk, I have decided to begin implementing flexible/alternative seating. So, we will also be needing a few 'wiggle stools' to add to our flexible seating options.
