My Students

I am a phys. ed. teacher in an elementary school. We start off with a warm up, an activity/game and then cool down in the gym. I want my students to understand the importance of health and fitness in their lives, "the greatest wealth is health"-Unknown. Students need more health awareness.

My school has a population of over 1,000 students, who come from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.

We offer many different programs that help parents become aware of new learning strategies and standards in order to help their children with their education. There are also programs for children who need academic intervention services in struggling subjects. The teachers in my school work hard so that each student gets the attention they need as well as the education they need in order to master the curriculum. Teachers achieve this by using all different kinds of media such as technology, books and even class trips to give the children experiences that they might not get from home. As a phys. ed teacher, I too, take students on field trips for health and fitness experiences.

My Project

I have requested an iPad to use with the physical education curriculum because technology is a widely used tool in education even with physical fitness. There are many apps that I have looked into which are geared toward health and fitness. To name a few, there is an app with virtual dice where I can put not only numbers on the dice but also a certain exercises or stretch for the students to do. There is also an app where I can enter the students' names and create random teams as needed, as well as have certain kids not be on each other's team. There are video clips I will be able to show to the students to model an exercise or give them a closer look at different concepts. It is also useful for music to play while warming up. Sometimes students do not participate in an activity because they are not prepared, have a health issue or are injured so they will be able to use the iPad to watch an educational video or play an interacitve game related to health.

Children love technology.

Using technolgy in the classroom seems to engage students more. Donations to my project will improve my classroom by allowing the students to use this technology during health and wellness instruction. Students do not realize the importance of physical fitness and by introducing them to different websites, apps and interactive games they will be able to bring these ideas home to share with their families or just play around with them on their own outside of school.
