My Students

All students need physical education and activity, but especially those with special needs. All too often when students can't participate in traditional physical education activities, their need for exercise is neglected.

The students in my class attend a public elementary school in a small town in Georgia.

They all have moderate to severe autism and intellectual disabilities, and some have seizure disorders and other physical/physiological needs as well. They all attend adapted PE once a week but I would love to have the materials to work on gross motor skills like crawling, throwing, kicking, running in class the other four days a week! My students typically aren't motivated by the same things as typical kids and therefore don't get as much active play and exercise as they need. I have to be creative in developing activities that will motivate them to GET A MOVE ON!

My Project

My kiddos LOVE animals and animal noises, so I think the animal tails will be a great motivator to get them to run - my assistants and I can "wear" the tails and the kids can chase us to grab them and make the animal noises. The clown will help them work on throwing towards a target - I think the fact that they can knock the clown over and it will bounce back up will fascinate the kids and make them want to play more. Finally, the tunnel with the balls inside will give them a sensory experience that they love (they all love ball pits) and encourage them to crawl - working those muscles in their arms and legs, getting them to coordinate both sides of their bodies, and have fun at the same time!!

These items and activities will give my students fun ways to move their bodies and get the physical activity that all children need.

They will provide fun movement activities for us to do in class and during recess while encouraging them to get some exercise and develop their muscles and coordination.
