My Students

If you were to look at the faces of my students, you would not be able to see the struggles and challenges they face in and out of the classroom. You would see hard workers, motivated learners, and problems solvers. In reality, the majority of my students are from socioeconomically low households, receive a free or reduced-price lunch, and are being raised in a single family household. Most of all, they deserve the same opportunities as a student in any other district.

As a teacher in a low-income, high-poverty district, I strive to provide my highly diverse and deserving students with as many learning experiences and opportunities as I can.

They love constructing STEM projects, diving into a challenging book, and using technology to extend their learning.

My Project

A major issue in our area is the prevalence of "bad" ozone at the surface level. Ozone harms our health, pollutes the air, and damages vegetation. This pollutant is caused by things like vehicle emissions, factory production, and power plants. Scientists are using ozone sensitive plants, plants like snap beans, cone flowers, and milkweed, to monitor local air quality. With an indoor gardening system, my students can become advocates for the environment through analyzing air quality in their own neighborhood. But wouldn't the impact be greater if students grew their own ozone sensitive plants with their own two hands? This indoor gardening system will help empower students by giving them the opportunity to create an experiment from start to finish, as well as making them invested advocates for the future of our environment.

Through this type of hands-on learning, my students will become instilled with the importance of caring for themselves, family, community, animals and plants, and the Earth around us.

My students will grow these ozone sensitive plants from seeds in the classroom, and when they are developed enough, the students will transplant them into our ozone garden. They will care for and monitor the health of the plants in order to detect ozone in the air. I truly believe it is the duty of educators to guide our learners to navigate the world around them and to get them asking questions about why things are the way they are. This can only happen if we provide them with the resources necessary to take learning into their own hands.
