My Students

My students are "at risk kids" attending a Title 1 middle school in California. They are great kids. Many of them are English language learners and are behind in reading and writing. My students come from a lower socioeconomic background but they have dreams of attending college. Difficult times in life translate to difficult times at school. Middle school isn't anyone best time of their lives. But there is hope.

My students qualify for special education services, but this never stops them from coming to school every day, working hard and achieving great things.

My students are curious, interesting and have ways of thinking outside the normal school classroom. I want to give them the lessons that stimulate their imagination and bolster their critical thinking skills. They might learn if different ways but the results are same when students are given the tools to succeed.

My Project

George Orwell's Animal Farm is needed now more than ever. I need a class set of this book so I can teach my students to critically think. In this day and age, I found students don't have a healthy understanding of the world around them. They live in a technology bubble that removes creative writing and the classic literary works. I want to dive deep into political over tones and introduce the witty satire to a new generation. This book changed my life and started me on a path to love literature.

The animal characters in the book have always captured the imaginations of countless children.

Animal Farm tells the story of Farmer Jones’ animals who rise up in rebellion and take over the farm. Tired of being exploited for human gain, the animals—who have human characteristics such as the power of speech—agree to create a new and fairer society. The novel reads like a fairy tale, and Orwell originally subtitled it as one, but it is also a satire containing a message about world politics and especially the former Soviet Union. In a satire, the writer attacks a serious issue by presenting it in a ridiculous, funny way.

The module I want to teach is aligned to the Common Core Standards and designed to provide students with reading and listening practice. It contains many reading exercises and activities as well as many group discussion questions. Students will be able to practice group speaking and reading as well as have a better understanding of new words and definitions. There are also many critical thinking exercises (predicting, inferring, points of view, analysis, debating, etc.)
