Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how difficult Geometry was when you were in high school? Imagine lacking the necessary resources to learn these difficult concepts. In most affluent schools today, teachers have the technological tools that provide their students an alternative method for learning Geometry.

Geometry is one of the most difficult subjects for our students to master.

Many are forced to retake it several times before they can pass, putting them at a disadvantage for college acceptance. They receive no support outside of school because they either live in a single parent home or both parents must work, sometimes even two jobs, just to make ends meet. They is no money for educational supplies or tutoring. Our students would really benefit from more hands on technological tools that would help them comprehend the concepts of Geometry. Our school is dedicated to helping at risk youth, who are just looking for a chance to change their lives and the lives of their families by being the first to go to college. Without Geometry, they cannot graduate much less go to college. Focused on providing these under privileged youth with the best education possible, our school strives to lead them down the path of becoming successful and productive adults.

My Project

I am requesting computer software that will provide them with an interactive learning experience. They will be able to manipulate geometric shapes which will give them a visual understanding of the abstract concepts. In addition, I would like to provide them with more hands on activities. The book and patty paper will help them to understand lines, bisectors and symmetry.

Our students just need more people to believe that if they had the same resources that the affluent student have, they can and will be successful.

Working with them for the past several years, I have seen the joy in their faces when they finally understand a concept they were finding difficult. The "aha" moment that brings hope to their difficult lives. Hope that they will graduate and go to college. These moments are what makes teaching so rewarding.
