What do YOU remember about middle school science? What will you help 225 brilliant and hard working scholars remember? We are the College Preparatory Science Learning Community. We are the class of 2017, 2018 and 2019 (the years we will graduate from college). We are at a high poverty middle school in NY, and we are looking for some exciting new hands-on indoor and outdoor laboratory materials from a donor like you!
As a first year teacher in a young school, I am quickly discovering that students are brilliant, yet science instruction has been limited in the past due to lack of resources. We have done our best to get creative in our experiments with the funds we have, but it is challenging to create hands-on science experiences without real supplies.
My scholars work so hard and are finished with the curriculum for their grade levels due to all of their extra studying! We have just enrolled in the GLOBE science program and need some basic supplies to conduct detailed research investigations about the weather, soil, and plants around our school. These materials will give my "city kids" an opportunity to go outside and experience the science that surrounds them every day while mastering many state standards through inquiry. The "Tree Finder" booklets have scholars use a dichotomous key to identify trees. This booklet is necessary for determining the types of trees that surround us. Additionally, it serves as an excellent practice tool for classification, which is heavily tested on the 8th grade state science exam. Clipboards will allow my scholars to become real field scientists by taking their experiments outside. This will be crucial for data collection and observations! Triple beam balances and large graduated cylinders are needed to find the density of soil and rock samples found outside. On the 8th grade performance test, scholars must be able to use these tools.
Creating hands-on, outdoor investigations with real science equipment will help my middle school scholars have a science experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives. My scholars have written that science is important because it helps solve problems in the world. They have written about their desire to find a cure for cancer and AIDS, to be surgeons and dermatologists, forensic anthropologists, and archaeologists. Please help them take the first step towards achieving their goals!
