My Students
Some of the best memories about school come from those extra learning opportunities your teacher provided for you. My Genius Hour is a creativity lab that happens Friday afternoons to enrich my students' experiences and broaden their interests. What fun snap circuits and erector sets are for kiddos!
My 26 students live in a remote Alaska town, nestled among mountains and near the Gulf of Alaska.
Our public school has a diverse population of students who come from remote Alaskan villages, the lower 48, and even other countries such as Mexico. They fish & hunt, ride snow machines, and play in the snow when it's below zero! I love their resilience! Yet many of them live in poverty. My students need to have rich opportunities for learning because our small town (coupled with the high poverty) is a very limiting factor on what is available for learning & doing. Yes, my students are definitely outdoors people, but to prepare them to be productive adults in the 21st century, they need exposure to more science, math, and technology. This happens in the classroom. I go beyond mandated curriculum every Friday afternoon during our Genius Hour, which is a creativity lab designed to offer opportunities for learning that are fun, but meaningful.
My Project
Can you imagine our Genius Hour? Picture a bustling classroom where students are gathered in small groups working on toothpick windmills, computer programming (really!!), hands-on science experiments, tessellations, and other such activities. Last year, I even brought in my spinning wheel and let a few boys & girls try that out. Some students choose to pursue art during Genius Hour. One parent volunteer enjoys leading a story-telling circle. Genius Hour is an opportunity for students to explore, create, and learn things that aren't part of our typical school offerings at this age. What's neat is that after students have spent a couple of weeks on a project, they share what they've done with the class, which gets everyone excited. So this year, students are very interested in electricity and building activities, and the products we've requested fit the bill perfectly! Please help enrich their lives by adding Snap Circuits and Erector Sets to our Genius Hour!
By providing these activities to my students, you will be providing them with opportunities that open possibilities to them and let them begin to understand the world in new ways.
I believe that learning happens best when it is hands on in cooperative/collaborative groups, and when it engages students because it is challenging and unique. I also believe it is important to provide activities in which each child can succeed. These activities will do all of that for my students! Thank you so much!
