My Students

DonorsChoose.org has provided me poster supplies in the past, and we need to replenish our supplies. We use posters to help us synthesize information from texts.

Ours is an inner city school in a large urban area.

Our school is high poverty -- 69% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. We also have English Language Learners from all over the world. Most of our students do not speak English in the home. Our school is a visionary place where we practice tolerance, celebrate diversity, and have high standards for every student.

My Project

Let me give you an example of how we use poster materials: For our unit on "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston we focused on her use of symbols. Throughout our reading, we kept a chart of symbols and their meanings. Then, in groups, we created highly visual posters illustrating the symbols, and including evidence from the text and interpretation. These we hung throughout the classroom. Then the students wrote essays on the purpose of symbols in literature, citing textual evidence provided in their posters. Students can thus share their knowledge and benefit from others' insights as they write.

Learning to write a college level essay is crucial for my students, who are facing many barriers to success.

Posters have proved an effective part of this process, making learning engaging, and helping students to gather the necessary textual evidence. Through this process, the use of evidence from the text becomes second nature, as does literary analysis as they interpret meaning.
