My Students

When I was a student, I looked forward to the first day of school: the new teacher, new friends, a new dress, and bright and shiny new school supplies. Many of my students do not have the privilege and joy of those supplies.

Our students endure a high level of poverty with the concurrent stresses of urban life.

Many are immigrants from Africa, Asia or Latin America, and English is not spoken at home. Our school has high expectations for all kids, and they are working hard to meet them. A lack of simple supplies, like paper and pencils, is a daily impediment to smooth learning.

My Project

I am asking for writing equipment like paper, pencils and pens. I am asking for erasers, because it's okay to make mistakes. I am asking for chalk so I can teach effectively. I am asking for printer toner for the donated printer in my classroom, so that students can print out articles and images to help them with research. I teach American Literature and Composition. Students explore writers from Native American and Puritan poets to the Transcendentalists, to the Harlem Renaissance to contemporary writers. The culminating essay for last year was a compare and contrast of a character in "The Great Gatsby" with any other character we'd encountered over the year, examining how social class and personal values impacted their relationships to the American Dream. For such magic, basic writing supplies are a must!

Because of inspired leadership and a dedicated staff, our public school is closing the achievement gap.
