Gel Electrophoresis Separates DNA, but DNA Doesn't Separate Us

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Race is an ever-present issue in my students' lives. They are all non-white immigrants who constantly hear themselves cast as "others" in media and even by our president. While racial equity is now an issue at the forefront of political debates and economic justice, they still want to know, what IS race?

Race is a social construct that has real impacts on people's health and well-being, but it is not based on genetics or any other field of biology.

I want my students empowered to understand the role of race in our world, and how to deconstruct the damage it can do to themselves, their families, and society. Also, by using real science experiments and methods to debunk the myth of race, I want them to see themselves as geneticists and molecular biologists.

To do this, we need the same kind of tools as genetics laboratories, especially gel electrophoresis boxes. This simple tool uses electricity and salt water to separate pieces of DNA by size. We need this tool to see whether we successfully extracted the DNA molecule we need for our analysis.

Using the tools of the scientific method, students will be able to see that race is something people ascribe to one another to maintain unfair power structures. In our small lab, we can prove that race has no basis in our genes or DNA. This is a powerful revelation as we debunk genetic arguments that have been made about racial superiority or inferiority. In reality, we all have more in common than divides us. We are all one human race.

Please donate and help my students in the fight for more racial equity and their pursuit of biological careers!
