My Students

My robotics team is an eclectic collection of students from AP and IB students to students with special needs. We are one of the oldest teams in South Carolina. In recent years, my team has increased from 17 to 48 students. They attend not only my school, but also schools from adjacent school districts and a few home schooled students. With this degree of diversity, you could almost suspect the team to be fragmented. However, the team is very much like a family, with everyone supporting one another.

The team does more than build robots.

They learn the soft-skills that are important in college and future careers. They learn how to work together, communicate their ideas in ways that others can understand, and they learn to listen to others. During competitions, they recognize that they need to cooperate with other teams to build a winning alliance.

My Project

My FIRST robotics team has discovered that building a robot with rivets makes for a faster build and it is far more forgiving than welded joints. During past competitions, we’ve experienced broken welds – which is nearly impossible to repair during the competition. In the past two seasons, we’ve used manual rivet guns to construct our robot. I’ve watched students hand-off the manual rivet gun multiple times, massaging their hands and forearms during their respite – waiting to again squeeze rivets into place.

With a robot containing as many as 500-650 rivets, it makes becomes arduous and time consuming to manually place each rivet.

With the requested air compressor and pneumatic riveter, the time and effort will be greatly diminished. Although FIRST isn’t a “battle bot” competition, the robot needs some level of protection from incidental collision. The fasteners will be used to construct the bumpers that we use to protect our robot during competition. Our bumpers proudly display our team’s character and number.
