My Students

Every day my students rush into my classroom excited to build our classroom community into a family. Our classroom is a safe place for them to explore learning and grow into college and career ready learners!

All of my students are English Language Learners and they are all also diagnosed with Autism.

My students live in an area of highest poverty in town and 100% of the students at our school receive a free lunch at our Title 1 school. Despite these challenges, my students are amazing kids! Many of them have significant behavioral issues that impact instruction for themselves and their classmates and they need materials to support their behavior and learning!

My Project

My students need a classroom rug. We have tile floors that are very cold and uncomfortable. We try to find other ways to meet together for a read aloud but sitting at their desks does not have the same impact as cozying up next to each other on a rug to be transported to another realm or time!

A classroom rug would transform our day.

It really helps students with autism to move around during the day by meeting in different areas in the classroom for instruction. My students currently rotate in small group instruction throughout the day using flexible seating options but they have expressed an interest in laying down while working on a rug. The general education classrooms they've mainstreamed in use a rug and I'd also like to explicitly teach expectations for sitting on rugs for read alouds in my room as well.
