My Students

I am a music therapist & music educator working in a large urban public school district at an early-childhood, special education center. My students represent diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, from middle class to homeless, including ELL populations. Their diversity extends to a wide range of learning styles & challenges. We serve 2-5-year-old children in an inclusive environment: autistic, high support needs, medical needs, and typically developing.

My students are most successful immersed in multi-sensory learning activities, tapping into multiple intelligences, promoting full engagement; music is auditory, kinesthetic, verbal, visual, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and natural!

Music provides opportunities for success-based, tiered responses for our diverse learners. Visual and audio supports, in the form of picture cues and voice output devices, are effective for repetition, practice, comprehension & success! Cooperative activities using peer models builds language, problem solving, & social emotional competency. Students can be fully immersed in learning activities structured through music, not realizing they are making connections, gaining other valuable skills! Children who are non-verbal in the classroom setting will often vocalize, or even speak during music! The power of music as an instructional tool is evident as many students participate & respond successfully in learning activities structured through music.

My Project

A defined space, easily sanitized between groups of students, will replace the current carpet, to enhance the health & safety of our music space given the continuation of COVID protocol needs.

The interlocking floor mats can be arranged & rearranged with ease to support the unique needs of each group; most importantly, the floor mats can be quickly cleaned between classes, creating a sanitized space for the next group of students!

Whether sitting & singing, exploring instruments, or engaging in creative movement, the interlocking floor mats will support student engagement while providing comfort, flexibility, & safety!
