My Students

A day in the life of a first grader at our school includes silliness, curious questions, writing stories, practicing using our manners, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors, and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.

Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using a hands-on approach.

They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.

My Project

Literacy is the foundation of learning. There are few things more important than teaching a child to read. By creating a text rich environment and positive experiences with literacy, children will absorb the love of reading and books.

Guided reading and literacy workstations are a sacred time in my classroom.

When working in guided reading groups we meet together at a rectangular table. I sit on one side so I can see and hear each student in my group. My students sit opposite of me as they read or interact with their text. My groups often have four students and as you can imagine it becomes rather crowded at our small reading table.

By having this requested kidney shaped table to teach literacy I'll be able to better interact with students and hear them read more clearly. I imagine students will be more comfortable working in a space where there is more room for them to manage their literacy materials.

In addition to using this table for Guided Reading groups, I will be able to pull groups of students for math and writing groups, as well. Having a kidney shaped table will help build our classroom community and engage students in their learning.
