My Project

My students with special needs of intellectual disability are in the 3rd to 5th grade span. They come to school every day with zest for learning and positivity. They are curious about the world around them and are so eager to learn. Almost all of them are from low-income families.

I want to introduce them at a young age to gardening of herbs, vegetables, and possibly fruits.

This idea hit me when I recently moved to a classroom beside a garden that was noticeably abandoned. If I instill in them a love for growing plants, then I am planting a seed that they may choose farming, landscaping, or even cooking as a career after high school when they attend Career and Transition Centers. This may be a far-off goal, but better to start early with students by exposing them to possible career options. Goals that are within reach are learning the different plants, nutrition, healthy vs unhealthy eating. They will learn how to grow by themselves in small and medium pots, whether it be an herb, vegetable, or succulent. They will own and be responsible for the growing of their plants. They can also learn about decorative plants for landscaping. They can go into business and sell whatever they grow.

As they grow plants, they can also build Lego plants and succulents for inspiration. Building Legos creates a sense of progression, especially when it is finished; the same is true with growing a garden. When vegetables and herbs are grown and consumed, the sense of learning and satisfaction will be overwhelming for students. They will become responsible and kind to all living things.
