My Students

My students would love to grow plants. The pandemic has brought about a great deal of change. Our once thriving urban community school has suffered as families have opted to leave to care for family members in other parts of the country and/or left our urban neighborhood for homes with yards.

My Project

I will use these systems to instill a passion for farming -- because students who grow their own food become self-sufficient and empowered to address issues of food insecurity.

My students will be asked to do all the farm planning -- like researching appropriate crops for the growing system and selecting crops that will be good for sharing.

They will engage in research projects to find out where our local food banks are and how we can donate part of our regular harvests.

We will use these systems for science lessons on plant life cycles and sustainability. We will also discuss how our class farm can help local food deserts.
