My Students

I teach middle level students who are learning English as a new language. The majority come from the Philippines, Southeast Asia, and the island nations of Micronesia. They need language support to be successful in their regular classes, as well as navigating their new environment.

I believe that language learners learn best through peer collaboration with hands-on, visual learning opportunities.

I aim to provide students with a lot of opportunities to interact with the core content they are learning. I also strongly believe in arts-integration as a powerful tool for learning.

My Project

My students have been reading a novel called Seedfolks about an inner city community garden that was started by a diverse group of people. It's a great book full of examples of people coming together, despite differences.

We began our own gardening project, inspired by our class novel Seedfolks, and we need some more materials.

We need seed starter trays, soil, and trowels to make sure our seeds have the best opportunity to grow. We also need raised beds so we can transplant the seedlings outside in order to grow in the warm Hawaiian sun.

These materials will add beneficial hands-on learning for my multilingual students, as well as add value to our entire campus. Perhaps our small garden will catch on, like the community garden did in Seedfolks. And we'll become the real "seedfolks", the ones who started it all.
