My Students

Our students just love the idea of planting seeds, although very few of them have actually been able to experience growing a plant from seed to fruit - or flower! We have such big plans for our little garden! We can't wait to get started!

My students are all special needs and are unable to attend their regular schools due to severe behavior issues that are a result of some severe emotional issues.

These behaviors make it impossible for them to be successful in their regular school environment. Our school is able to provide them with a safe place to learn while they get a handle on some of their behaviors and learn to properly cope with their issues. These are the students who have rarely been given the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular type activities. That does not mean their desire to participate in these type of activities is even slightly diminished - on the contrary - these are the activities that excite them, engage them and make them happy to get to school.

My Project

The students will learn so much from this project! Planting seeds and caring for the plant throughout its development is a skill that can serve them throughout their lives! They will experience working together with their peers in a positive environment in which they can grow relationships along with their beans and flowers. We have in mind planting beans because they grow fast, are a hardy plant and we have already secured our garden spot which has the perfect climbing fence for them. Beans don't like to be transplanted so we have asked for the large pots in which to plant them. The little starter pots will be perfect for starting flowers in our new little greenhouse that we have asked for. We will use our potting bench for planting and transplanting. We will learn different ways to propagate plants by setting out some cuttings in the vermiculite in our little greenhouse. With all these wonderful supplies all we will need are some seeds and some potting soil and we will be gardening!

The students will be excited to get out in the sun to do some learning.

An outdoor classroom has always been a dream. They will learn skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. This is just the beginning - once we have started harvesting crops, we will be heading into the kitchen to cook up some healthy feasts! But that is another project for another day!
