My Project

My students are learning to be more independent. They are currently working towards developing life skills to foster their self-esteem and competence in performing activities for daily living. My students have multiple disabilities. They attend classes in an occupational training center. Despite the physical and cognitive challenges each student faces each day, my staff and I work to provide both hands-on opportunities to build their comprehension and ability to employ compensatory strategies. Since the students may experience difficulty in following or understanding instructional requests, exercises feature regular review and repetition.

Our lessons are delivered in an engaging and interesting fashion, in the form of fun-filled, relevant exercises that build critical life skills and provide experiences for our students to participate in age-appropriate, functional manner like cooking, gardening, composting and cleaning.

The efficacy of my instruction is increased when lessons are presented in a multidisciplinary, thematic and FUNctional way. Students benefit from utilizing concrete objects, adapted learning materials and equipment as well as by tackling daily living challenges. In a Science themed unit celebrating the locavore movement, students will use garden tools to plant a variety of vegetables to be used in our class cooking exercises. Meal planning and preparation will be addressed in Math. Kitchen utensils and equipment such as induction wok and ice maker will enhance my students' experience in preparing healthy meals. Bucket and sweep set will provide students with first hand experience tools to perform everyday household chores.

In sum, the use of tools and equipment will promote a strong foundation in functional life skills that will serve to enhance both cognitive development and emotional well-being of students with multiple impairments.
