Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in the South Bronx of New York City. My students do not have a playground with grass to go play in during recess. In fact, my school does not have recess for first grade students. This is why every Fall and Spring, I bring my students to the local community garden. I want them to get outside, to explore and discover a green space, and to understand that we can all cultivate something beautiful and positive in our community. The garden is right around the corner from my school, but it is very underused. Hardly any classes visit the garden or utilize it. One of the reasons why I think the garden is underused is simply due to the lack of tools and resources at hand. This is why I want gardening tools for my students to use when we go out to the garden. Tools such as rakes, hoes, forks, and digging shovels are necessary to plant different seedlings and watch them grow. These tools would not function only as a resource for students in my classroom; they would be shared with other teachers in the school. Students love the garden. They even love digging up and holding wriggly worms in their hands! They learn how things grow and they learn how to love and take care of living things. Please help me acquire gardening tools as well as seeds to grow. Being able to teach inner city kids about nature from inside an actual community garden is a rare opportunity. It is also an invaluable one. Thank you!
