Garden Club!

Help me give my students the tools we need to convert an under utilized, sun-drenched science lab into an indoor garden/greenhouse. We will explore creative ways to use the space to experiment with growing plants.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

High school should be a time of new experiences and reaching beyond the world as you've known it. My students are curious, creative, resourceful, and eager to see what the world has in store beyond our Brooklyn neighborhood. Most of my students come from all different countries and some of them are just starting to learn English and become accustomed to American culture.

Almost all of my students are low income and face extreme challenges at home and outside of the classroom.

Yet they come to school to learn and grow with an inspiring dedication to educating themselves in ways that will help them become well-rounded adults. My classroom is a safe space where students come to find comfort being themselves and to hone their skills of self expression and communication.

My Project

City kids love nature as much as anyone but often don't have the opportunity to dig in the dirt and watch plants grow from seed to fruit. The newly formed Garden Club has discovered this magical hidden gem of a space in our school and collectively we dream of the possibilities that we can nurture. This experience will be formative for the students, as they discover not only what it means to be a city gardener and grower, but also how to envision a greener world in their own backyard, and see a such a project to fruition. Growing food will naturally lead to discussions of food choice and nutrition as well as issues of food justice and equity. We hope that once the garden is up and running, we can expand its reach to begin a school composting project and encourage healthy eating and sustainability in our school and community. But that's for another project!
