My Project

We started a school garden club last fall with about twenty five student in grades Kindergarten to 5th grade. We were able to transform a trash filled, weed laden strip of land in our school yard into a garden growing tomatoes, cantaloupe, pumpkins and squash. The flowers, vegetable and landscaped area was a welcoming site to our schoolyard. A lot of our students were amazed to see that pumpkins don't just come from the grocery store. They are now able to see the fruit grow, be picked and then shared to be eaten.

This year, we want to go a step further.

We have our original outdoor garden project still going on, as we finish up our harvest, and prepare the garden beds for the winter. However, we also want to show our students that gardening and food production does not have to stop just because the Pennsylvania weather gets too cold. With hydroponics, we can teach our student another method of growing organic food indoors all year round.

The set up, seeding, fertilizing, trimming and care for the hydroponic garden are all aspects of our teaching and learning curriculum. My co-teacher and I are hoping to learn along side our students and share in the ups and downs of this new venture.

We also included a micro-green garden into our project. This simple yet healthy garden venture is another new form of indoor edible gardening to share with our students. Growing micro-greens can be done at home for our students and hopefully encourage them to begin their own gardens and healthy choices.
