As a 6th grade teacher, so often we see our 5th graders coming to us without crucial social-emotional learning skills. Part of our job as 6th grade teachers is teaching skills that help our students to function at a middle school level. These skills are things like working cooperatively, building a growth mindset, following multi-step directions and organizational skills.
Board games are a fun and engaging way to build these important life skills.
During the school year, we have homeroom classes once a week dedicated to these social emotional learning skills. The lessons that come down through our county are very one-size fits all and our 6th graders sometimes need more hands on learning. By playing these games, they have to follow multi-step directions, work together as well as competitively and start to develop positive thinking patterns when they are not winning. Not only does it target these social emotional learning skills, but creates a friendly and welcoming environment for our large population of English language learners as they start to navigate middle school vocabulary.
