This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Workbook, pencil, solve, write, next question. BORING! No one learns math this way. My students are dying on the inside to play with their math. My students want to be engaged with their math and need Chromebooks and mice for access to online games, videos, and great programs such as Khan Academy!

My 6th grade class is 96% low income in a Title I public elementary school.

We're a high needs school in a high needs community trying to make do with the few resources we have. In my class, I have 48 high energy students that are eager to learn when given the chance. They participate actively and are always asking questions about the world around them. Unfortunately, though, we have a math curriculum that does not have many hands-on options. Currently my students learn math through a workbook. I want to better prepare my students for this technology driven world that they are growing up in and what a great way to have the students play with their math through online games and programs such as Khan Academy that is made for them to succeed at their pace!

My Project

With a set of 22 Chromebooks (and mice to help navigate), my students will be able to use them 1-1 to practice their math skills using various online games. They will be able to persevere through tough concepts by doing what they love doing- playing games. The Chromebooks will allow for better differentiation as the students can play various games at their level, watch instructional videos to reinforce concepts, or take learning in their own hands and make their own videos to post. With Chromebooks, the students can master concepts using great programs such as Khan Academy! We will be able to shift our learning from teacher directed to more student directed.

A set of Chromebooks and accompanying mice for my classroom will make learning more fun, hands-on, and better differentiated for my students.

There will be less teacher directed lectures and more student engagement. The students would actually have fun practicing math with games and videos instead of just learning with a worksheet. The students will be able to use Khan Academy daily to master skills at their own level.
