My Students

I teach third-grade math in one of the best rural schools in Oklahoma! We are a Title I school with the majority of our students receiving free lunches.

My students are a diverse group of children with varying levels of learning.

Our classroom is a safe space where we enjoy coming to learn. My students love to learn in non-traditional ways: through technology, room transformations, integrating arts into our lessons, and project-based learning.

My students have huge hearts and are extremely curious about their learning. They have creative, compassionate, and amazing attitudes. They are truly wonderful children. My school is wonderfully supportive of the active hands-on learning that we do in our classroom. I could not ask for a better environment for these students. We are truly a community!

My Project

Research has proven that the use of play-based learning in classrooms is more effective than direct-instruction approaches or traditional academic-oriented teaching styles. Some studies have shown addition to improving play skills and narrative language ability, play-based learning has a positive influence on students cooperation and collaboration.

Utilizing games to reinforce previous learning the classroom makes students "feel" like they are playing without having to think very hard.

Most students have not been able to play with others in a close proximity since COVID-19 has started. We are instructing our students to have their personal space, face in the chromebook, etc. when they need to have those childhood interactions of playing with friends and communicating with others.

Games will help the students have increased attentiveness and engagement with their learning and their peers. Allowing my students to physically play the educational games can build a fundamental understanding of quantities, balance, stability, geometry, reading skills, etc. I will implement the games into classroom activities to spark my students understanding in the above areas.

Each game on this project is for reinforcing of concepts, completing STEAM activities with our whole class, or learning to cooperate and communicate with classmates. The bonus of this project is these items will be able to be utilized for years to come and with numerous students.
