Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember playing board games in school? Neither do I. It's time to change that!

My students are bright and curious.

They are also living in one of the poorest districts in NYC, which limits their opportunities for playing games outside of school. And because most games cannot accommodate a class of 32 students (nor meet common core standards), they can't really play games during class time either!

My Project

I plan to invite small groups of students to play games during our lunch period this year in an effort to change this trend. All of the games I'm requesting encourage logical and strategic thinking. For example, Q-ba-maze encourages players to problem solve and create a marble run in multiple ways, while Hanabi challenges them to work together in order to beat the game itself! I've chosen a variety of games to support students with different social and emotional needs, as well--solitary (Gravity Maze, Solitaire Chess, etc.), cooperative (Forbidden Island, Pandemic, etc.) and competitive (Smash Up, Tokaido, etc) games allow for these various needs. Many of the games also involve math and literacy, but they don't have to know that!

With your donations, my students will be able to carve out a time and space for themselves to sharpen their minds, meet and/or improve their social and emotional needs, and just be kids!
