Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the lives of people across our country and around the world. Months of isolation, the pain of losing loved ones, and the fear of contracting the virus affected everyone, but perhaps none more so than our children... specifically, teenagers who thrive on the social aspect of school. Recent studies have shown a significant increase in the number of teens suffering from depression and other mental health issues as a result of the pandemic.

One way to help our children improve their mental health is by designing a place where they can create, connect, and collaborate.

It is my goal to provide such a place in our library media center. Here students will have an opportunity to not only check out books, but also find a place where they can be creative, be social, be teens! A place to disengage from the pressures of the academic world. A place to create through art. A place to establish bonds with others in our school community by working and playing together. A safe place to be themselves.

This addition to their school life will, in turn, have a direct effect on what happens in the classroom and beyond. Students will be more engaged because they have had an opportunity to make connections, to temporarily put aside fears and concerns about the world, to disconnect and recharge. Traditionally, students recharge by playing sports during the lunch/recess break, talking with friends in the cafeteria, or working on service club projects. Sadly, however, after Covid-19, we’ve had an increasing number of students who feel isolated; they sit with their phones/headphones and make no attempt to engage or be engaged with others. Those are the students who will ultimately benefit the most from our Game ON! activities.
