Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We haven't started the 2016-2017 school year at this time, and so I will talk about my students in general. They are overall great students who are eager to learn. They enjoy science lessons and yet struggle with reading and mathematics. They are inquisitive, smart, and fun to be around.

The students at my school live in a high poverty area.

Last year the school was 100% free lunch because of the low income. The school is located in a Hispanic neighborhood with a large subsidized housing area.

My Project

My students need games to work on strategy, good sportsmanship, teamwork, and prediction. This includes four UNO games, six Chess and Checkers and Backgammon Sets and three Sets of Five Game Favorites. I would like to start an after school game club for the students in my school. This will not be limited to grade level but with an invitation for any who want to join. It has been my experience that the majority of the children attending my school have had no opportunities to play board games. I've had several that have never played Trouble.

I believe that giving young students an opportunity to play board games increases strategy, innovative thinking, good sportsmanship, and creative thinking.

This also benefits students by giving them a creative outlet during after school hours. By providing a large variety of games students will be able to find a favorite from chess to Uno.

These games will increase trial-and-error concepts that develop logical thinking in children. Set strengthens counting skills and fine motor development in children.
