Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students commute to school from all 5 boroughs of New York City. Here they find a diverse, creative, and welcoming community focused on engaging their passions related to fashion, art, and business. The school library complements these academic pursuits with research materials. It also serves as a space for developing other aspects of a student's identity through books for independent reading as well as book and game clubs.

My students love playing, watching, and discussing all types of different games.

In our school library, I host a weekly game club featuring titles by independent, experimental, and diverse creators as an opportunity for students to connect through a shared interest. My hope is to also inspire their own creative endeavors be it writing, design, or even programming their own games.

We are a Title I school with 82% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-priced lunch and our student population is 58% Hispanic, 30% Black, 4% Asian, and 5% White, and 91.5% female and 8.5% male. Our game club focuses on representation that reflects the identities of our students as well as equitable access to all platforms, genres, and games.
