Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a public elementary school, in an area plagued with high poverty and unemployment, in North Houston. My students have faced many obstacles the average 50 year old has never faced. They come to school to learn, despite the lack of stability at home. They are eager mathematicians and soaring scientists. They come from immigrant homes, 100% high risk, where the parents often works two jobs just to make sure that the children have the basic needs for school. My students have a desire to learn and grow. They want to be good role models for their younger siblings. They work hard each day, and they come to school with a positive attitude. I want to make sure that my students have the same opportunities to learn as their peers, who are not facing the same obstacles. In August of 2017, our community was hit with a tragic natural disaster, Hurricane Harvey, and it has been exceptionally hard on our students and their families to get back on their feet.

My Project

The games and supplies that I am requesting for my students will help help us have a game changing year! We recently exited our IR-rating and want to now incorporate common household games into learning tools! We are hoping to transform these games not only at school but at home too but we just need your help in getting everything through our door! We are ready to win, we just need your help! The donations to this project will help to improve my students' critical thinking skills and content material, and scholars have fun doing it! Have you ever thought that you could turn PIE face into a game about author’s purpose. This game will help persuade, inform and surely entertain our honeybees. Or what about place value guess who? Other teachers will be able to utilize these board games to plan more engaging lessons for their scholars.

By giving the students the opportunity to play games, we are not only helping their academic learning, we are teaching them how to work together and problem solve.

In addition to the board games, my scholars will benefit from material for our campus pet and materials for t-shirt making for an after school club! Students will be designing shirts for many different events on campus and will have contests from their designs.
