My students are Native Alaskan from rural Alaska grades pre-school students to the twelve grade. They are located in a small village along the Yukon River. They are great to be around. Many of them love to play sports and basketball and other different activities.
My Project
Teaching students to play an instrument will help the build social skills, math skills and literacy skills. Many students in rural Alaska do not have access to the opportunity to play or learn a musical instrument. Music helps to develop coping skills and supports growth in brain development. Reading music builds skills in timing and numbers. Music builds positive social skills and literacy skills. Lastly, music inspires the exploration of culture and tolerance of others. This project will help Native Alaskans explore different cultures while developing other skills across the curriculum.
