My Students

My fifth grade students are on their last stop in their elementary school career. Teaching them greater responsibility and accountability is an important part of this year. It is essential that they leave here equipped to succeed in a much larger and more demanding educational setting Our classroom has many opportunities for students to take charge of their learning and to have ownership in what takes place. My goal is that they will leave my classroom confident and prepared for what lies ahead.

My Project

I would like to organize book clubs with my students as a way to study World War II.

The novels I have chosen for them each explore the War from the perspective of different young people in different parts of the world during that time.

The characters include a young man in America whose father is away fighting in the conflict, a teenage girl who becomes a resistance fighter in Poland, a young man spying for the allies whose cover is to join the Hitler Youth, and a young girl in England who leaves the danger of the city for the countryside.

Students will study in their groups and then present to one another. As a class we will compare and contrast the perspectives and experiences. I believe this will be an effective way to help students to learn about and connect to the events of World War II and how it affected those who lived during that time.
