My Students

Many of my seniors this year are reluctant readers, but they want to change that status. When the school year began all of my students wrote reading biographies and most of my 90 seniors wrote that they don't know what they like to read and/or don't like to read.

My students also wrote that they want to read true stories that they can connect with, stories that will broaden their horizons.

They desire books and stories they can connect with.

My Project

Memoirs like The Glass Castle and A Long Way Gone offer windows to experiences readers may never live themselves. They also offer solace to readers who need to know they are not alone.

This year my seniors will read a memoir of their choosing in hopes that it will open their eyes to other cultures, experiences, lifestyles, etc. Throughout the unit we will discuss the overarching themes in the memoirs, connect them to current events, and think about what there is to gain from reading each author's story.

This opportunity will allow my seniors to think about who they are as individuals and how they can grow as a person after reading their memoir of choice. My students live in a small community and can gain much from reading about so many varied life experiences.
