My Project

The students who I work with are a diverse group of children with Autism who have communication difficulties that greatly impact their ability to interact with the world. They will benefit from an iPad in Speech and Language therapy to explore many communication applications. These applications will give my students a voice and a way to express their wants and needs.

My goal for this project is to provide my students with an iPad equipped with a variety of communication systems and applications in order to determine the most functional fit for them!

In order to receive a Speech and Language communication device on an iPad, my students have to go through an evaluation. This can be a lengthy process in which students are not guaranteed to trial different systems to find the best fit. Often the evaluation only consists of one system being trialed. This makes it difficult to truly determine which application is the most appropriate for each child. In the past, this has resulted in students being given a communication application that is not the best fit. My students would benefit from having access to an iPad with communication applications to trial and become comfortable with before an evaluation is completed. This will help set my students up for success and give them a voice their parents have been waiting for years to hear.
