My Students

My students are a great bunch of kids who have shown great enthusiasm for my 6th grade literacy class. I have a wide variety of students in my classroom from many different backgrounds. Unfortunately, one thing that they have in common is that many of them are reading below grade level and are also reluctant readers. Our next unit is a partner reading unit, and with a new batch of graphic novels in our classroom library, I am convinced that this is the way to keep the enthusiasm for literacy going. A lot of kids need a reason to keep reading, and graphic novels have a complete story with fewer pagers and more illustrations. They are also less intimidating for reluctant readers, and could be the key to helping my students to keep up their interest in reading and to helping to raise their reading levels.

My Project

We are nearing the middle of our school year and my students need some extra incentive to keep reading. We are about to start a unit for partner reading/social issues and the students need multiple copies of books that will hold their interest. Graphic novels are books that have grown immensely popular in the past few years. They tell a complete story, but with more illustrations to keep kids more engaged. These specific graphic novels will help my students read about and engage in conversation about social issues that we deal with in our school and in the world at large. The majority of my students are reading below grade level, so this is just the thing I need to keep them excited and mentally engaged in this upcoming unit. With your help I can keep my students fully engaged in the next unit as well as help to raise their reading levels. Please consider donating.
